Nuts About Nuts
August 2006

Recently I've been looking around for some aluminium wheel nuts to bolt my newly refurbished wheels on with but have struggled to find anything that pleases both my taste and wallet. With this in mind i've decided to have a go at making my own. I've done three test nuts so far with promising results. I didn't expect the HE30 aluminium to be able to take any sort of torque so was pleased to see them take 65lb/ft repeatedly without an issue. Testing to destruction is next!

Not only that but there is a small weight saving in them too. The standard Subaru nuts weighs in at an already-light 26 grams, the two 30mm nuts i machined come in at 13 grams but the 25mm nut comes in at a feather-like 11 grams. That's a 300 gram (or 58%) saving all round the car.

Also this month i took stock of some head tank insulators. There are currently a couple of pairs of these on trial at the moment including a pair on my own car. They appear to be working well so look out for them in Products within the next couple of months.

eBay turned up a bargain brand new Roger Clark Motorsport air filter for me this month too. I was lucky just to find it as it didn't have any obvious words like 'Subaru' or 'Impreza' in the title. In the end i bagged it for a smidge under £46 delivered.
