April 2008
Top of the jobs list this month was to get rid of all the dirt clinging to the car following Marcs excellent detail in March. This was done with surprising ease, it's amazing how well treated paint work can actually help look after itself!
Following on from a good scrub i decided to investigate the engines cam timing. Andy Forrest had raised concerns regarding the cars air flow following Aprils mapping session. I decided to remove the cam covers to inspect the cam belt and positioning of the pulleys. Although everything lined up as expected i decided to swap the cam belt and tensioner just to be sure. This seems to have had some effect as the car feels different to drive now, it certainly feels much keener to breathe at the top end... that'll be another map tweak required then! :-)
I also picked my oil separator up from the ally welders. Unfortunately i hadn't left enough space around the mounting lugs to allow the welder sufficient access with his torch. This meant the tank had to go to the machine shop to have some of the weld removed before it could be trial fitted on the car. Happily the tank now fits perfectly and i even took the opportunity to run the new breather pipes across the engine bay. As the tank is now at the powder coaters i am currently slumming it using an empty coke bottle (diet of course...) to catch any liquid carry over. Some M20x1.5mm bosses were machined from mild steel and welded into a spare sump. This is so i don't have to return the contents of the catch tank via the sump plug and so i can mount an oil temperature sender.
The main project this month was to install a Neetronics DCCD Controller and SPA Dual Oil Temperature Gauge. Unfortunately I've all but run out of gauge-space so decided to bin the radio and fit a custom telemetry panel. This was cut from stainless steel and with a lick of graphite-grey paint almost looks factory! The SPA gauge will monitor oil temps both above #3 piston and in the sump. The Neetronics controller has been added to help me make better use of the cars DCCD system. It has a multitude of overrides which are able to be configured for different situations (throttle/brake trigger, low/high speed override etc) which I'm already feeling the benefit of in the car.
My new rear brakes also arrived courtesy of Ian Godney. Guess what's top of the list of jobs for next month?!
